DOCK ST. THEATER - Art Print

Dock Street Theater is located in the historic French Quarter neighborhood in Charleston.

The Dock Street Theater's original structure was built in 1736 on the corner of Church Street and Dock Street (now known as Queen Street), and was the first building in America built exclusively to be used for theatrical performances.

The original building was likely destroyed by The Great Charleston Fire of 1740. In 1809, the current building was built on the site as the Planter's Hotel then later converted to a theater in 1935.  A number of notable persons patronized the Planter's Hotel including the noted 19th Century actor Junius Brutus Booth (father of Edwin and John Wilkes Booth).

Most importantly: Charleston's famed Planter's Punch was first introduced here.
